

Elbow Exam
Intro + Vitals + General
1) Inspection: SEADS
2) Palpation:

Temperature
-
Olecranon + medial & lateral epicondyles + Cubital fossa for tenderness
-
Joint line (90 degrees flexed) for tenderness or swelling
3) ROM: Active, Passive & Power
-
Flexion, extension, pronation and supination
4) Neuro exam of hand:
-
Motor: Thumb abduction (Median nerve), Wrist extension (radial nerve), Finger abduction (Ulnar nerve)

Sensory: Median, ulnar and radial
5) Special tests:
-
Tennis elbow: Pain in the lateral epicondyle with extension against resistance

Golfer’s elbow: Pain in the medial epicondyle with flexion against resistance
6) Thank the Patient!
7) Say: "to complete my exam, I would like to do":

Check the pulses of the upper limb (radial / ulnar / brachial)

UL brief neuro exam
-
One joint above and one joint below examination (shoulder / wrist)
-
Examine the other elbow.
